We’ve talked a little bit about your target audience. How to Identify, Target, Engage and Aggregate, but I want to address the question of who’s responsibility it is to build YOUR AUDIENCE. Other distributor’s won’t tell you this! Given advances in production technology and the fact that the market is flooded with movies, YOU are responsible for sourcing YOUR own audience.
Not the sales agent.
Not the movie distributor.
Not the PR company.
While all these services can add value to your project, ultimately the one thing that matters is YOUR AUDIENCE. The single most important part of YOUR MOVIE BUSINESS is building YOUR AUDIENCE (email list, followers, likes). “Why is this so important?” you might ask. They are your buyers! Your buyers are online. Because without brick and mortar video stores, much of your movie selling opportunity is going to come from VOD. Nowadays, everyone has their nose in their iPhone or tablet or laptop. They are all connecting with their friends and family and even conducting business online. So you have to reach YOUR AUDIENCE online. That’s where you will build YOUR AUDIENCE and where they are going to find you.
You finally got a distribution deal, but you have to get YOUR AUDIENCE to your Buy My Movie page. YOUR AUDIENCE is online, not at the no-longer-in-existence video store! You have to Engage YOUR AUDIENCE online with things like “Hey I saw you liked that movie about flying turtles. You might like this one at www.itunes.com/mymovieaboutturtleswithwings!”
The sales agent, the distributor and the PR company can help you with placements and marketing and maybe even sponsor partnerships, but it is YOUR film and its YOUR AUDIENCE they have to market to. Sponsor partners and VOD platforms already have a built in audience but they want to reach YOUR AUDIENCE to promote their products to. You have to work together to formulate the best strategy for reaching and growing YOUR AUDIENCE and getting YOUR AUDIENCE to purchase YOUR film. Do you have an online audience they can market to? If you don’t have an audience then you most likely don’t have a distribution deal.
